“I Wanted To Do Something That Will Represent Disability In The Beauty Industry As I Have Never Seen Anything To Really Represent What I And So Many Others Live With” Doaa Shayea.

Who is Doaa

I am a beautician and wheelchair racer

Doaa is a lovely name is there a meaning behind it?

Aw, thank you! It’s Egyptian and it means prayer

What do you do for fun?

I go to the gym or shopping or go out to eat.

Who is your role model?

My mum

What is your favourite book and song?

Favourite book is Kriss Akabusi On Track. My favourite song moonlight by Ali Gatie, worst luck by 6lack, also Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara

Tell me an interesting fact about yourself?

I have a true weakness and just beyond an obsession with bling, glitter and diamonds

You were born with Spina Bifida; tell me a bit about that

Spina bifida is when a baby’s spine and spinal cord don’t develop properly in the womb, causing a gap in the spine.

You are in a wheelchair how does this affect your day to day routine?

My routine isn’t really effected as such until there is an odd one or two people who I come across on the day that makes me remember that I’m different to the rest I guess.

Why did you decide to get into the world of makeup?

Makeup has been my true love from as long as I can remember and I wanted to become great at it from a very young age – younger than most I’d say. There’s also been a huge element of wanting to cover what I’ve been through and wear it as a mask and also show that I can still be skilful with makeup even if I am in a wheelchair

Have you ever been treated differently due to your disability whilst doing makeup on people?

I had a woman refuse to have me being mobile MUA and go to her house because I am in a wheelchair and she said she’d prefer if someone who can walk to go and do her hair and makeup and few similar situations.

You are a makeup artist and recently you put a picture up with all the words people have said to you in terms of insults. Tell me why you did that and what was the response?

I wanted to do something that represented disability in the beauty industry as I had never seen anything to really represent what I and so many others live with. I wanted to also show the unheard of or hidden side of what it’s like to live with a disability and how I personally mask the pain.

Where do you feel the judgement comes from?

I think it’s not knowing.  With disabilities not being shown on tv or talked about in the media like so many things now in 2019, it keeps disability as such an alien topic let alone seeing anyone with a disability and not being able to do anything but assume.

You have won awards for being such a great role model, tell me more

I have won a few business and sports awards which I am so privileged to have and to know that some people are seeing me and my work, motivates me to keep going

If you could change anything in this world what would it be?

For people to love one another and understand and never judge.

You still remain so positive no matter what, how do you keep your spirits up

I believe in hard work paying off and anyone that works and wants to make a change will someday get their breakthrough. A negative mindset causes more barriers that life already creates

How do you deal with negativity?

All I literally do is ignore it. I think that’s all you can do and overpower it with being positive and being confident in yourself and your abilities

What have you learnt about yourself dealing with these situations that have arisen in your life?

That I am strong and capable and I can overcome anything if I’ve come this far, with so many obstacles in my life then I can achieve anything.

What is next for Doaa?

Just keep being a voice for those who don’t have one or can’t and to change the world’s perspective of what disability is
