“I Will Continue My Role As A Graphic Designer But I Will Definitely Use The MasterChef Platform To Do Something With Food” Jasmeet Dial

Who is Jasmeet?

I am a 38-year-old, son, husband and dad of two gorgeous girls. I am a graphic designer, who enjoys cooking and became a semi-finalist on the most recent series of MasterChef UK.

What are your hobbies?

Cooking, watching movies (all kinds), visiting art galleries and exhibitions. Use to be an avid comic book collector – just not had a chance recently.

What is your favourite song and book?

I don’t really have a favourite song as such but my favourite genres include R&B, Hip-Hop, Bhangra and Hindi music. In particular, I still love to listen to old school, 90s R&B and Hip-Hop. I have a couple of books, one is a design book called; ‘The art of looking sideways’ by Alan Fletcher. I got this book whilst at university and still refer to it now. The other is ‘The flavour thesaurus’ by Niki Segnit. A great book about flavour combinations.

Who are your role models?

For me, my role models are my family – including my parents. I draw upon all of them in various ways in order for me to keep pushing forward with life but also keeping a balance.

What is your day job?

I am a Senior Graphic Designer for a medical communications agency called: Synergy Vision

Where does your love of cooking come from?

I have enjoyed cooking for a while now, but even at home when I was growing up, we would always have family gatherings or gatherings for special occasions and festivals – where food would always play a big part.

What is your favourite dish?

A well-made tandoori chicken – always a winner for me!

What made you decide to go on Masterchef?

After cooking at home for many years – my wife would always suggest that I should apply for the show and after much persuasion, I submitted my application in February 2019

What was your favourite part of being on the show?

The best parts of being on the show were cooking for the judges, being able to cook in a professional kitchen, cooking on a Royal Navy Ship and of course meeting the other awesome MasterChef contestants!

How difficult were the tasks?

Some of the tasks were quite difficult – but at those points, you need to rise up to the occasion and tackle to the best of your ability

Who of the fellow contestants do you still stay in touch with?

There are quite a few contestants I stay in touch with – particularly with Natasha, Beverly, Claire and Thomas.

Did you ever think you would be a semi-finalist?

No never!

Since leaving the show what have you been doing?

Continuing with my job really – it has been quite busy! But also pushing forward with the food side of things on Instagram (@jasmeetcooks)

How have you coped during the lockdown?

Lockdown has been quite challenging – with adapting to working from home, not being able to work directly with my team at Synergy Vision, also keeping on top of the homeschooling for my eldest daughter – but we are doing what we can.

Will you be bringing out your own desi cookbook?

Perhaps in the future

What is next for Jasmeet?

I think I will continue my role as a graphic designer but I will definitely use the MasterChef platform to do something with food – once we are back to some kind of normality it will easier to judge what that may be. So in the meantime enjoy my recipes and advice on my Instagram!
